How do I receive Campus Alert text messages?

You can provide up to three text-enabled phone numbers via CIS. Log in to CIS at cis.utah.edu, and click on the Campus Alert link. Enter your mobile phone numbers in the text-enabled phone number fields. Be sure to press the Save button when you are done.

Please note that text messages can become lost or slow during busy times, so we encourage you to enter at least one voice messaging contact.

What happens after I provide my text number via CIS?

After you sign up online, the Campus Alert service will automatically send a text message to your mobile phone to confirm your request.

The confirmation message will read the following:

University of Utah: You are now confirmed to receive alerts from us. More info text reply "HELP" or "STOP UU" to opt-out. Msg&data rates may apply.

I heard that my peer received a text message on the cell phone from the U, but I did not. Why?

You can receive text message alerts by providing a text-enabled phone number via CIS. Log in to CIS at cis.utah.edu, and click on the Campus Alert link. Enter your mobile phone numbers in the text-enabled phone number fields. Be sure to press the Save button when you are done.

From what number will these text messages display?

You will see 23177 or 63079 as the text messaging number sending you the confirmation message and all subsequent messages. Please save these numbers and program them as Campus Alert in your contacts, so that you can quickly recognize this number as the official source of university messages.

If I enroll at night, will I receive the confirmation message?

Yes. The confirmation messages are sent between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. Depending on the time of day you saved your cell phone number in CIS, you should expect the confirmation request to arrive that evening or the following day.

I did not receive a confirmation message. What happened?

Please check with your mobile phone provider to find out if your device accepts text messages. You may also want to check with your provider to see if text messaging has been enabled. You may need to subscribe to a text messaging plan in order to receive or reply to text messages.

I did not receive a confirmation message because my phone wasn’t text enabled. I have since contacted my mobile phone provider to enable it. Do I need another confirmation message sent?

No. If your mobile phone was already submitted to our database, you should be confirmed to receive text message alerts from us. However, you may also test to find out by texting the word “SUBSCRIBE” to 23177 or 63079 and you will receive a reply with the following:

University of Utah: This phone number has already been opted in. More info text reply "HELP" or "STOP UU" to opt-out

How do I opt-out?

You can opt-out of all notifications except to your official university email address, UMail for students. To opt-out, log in to CIS at cis.utah.edu, and select the Campus Alert link. Select the “I opt-out of this text alert system” checkbox and then press Save.

If I change mobile phone providers but keep the same number, do I need to enroll again?

No. Once your phone number has been enrolled, it stays registered within the system.

Am I charged my normal texting fees?

Yes.  You will be charged according to the plan in place with your service provider.
