U of U CAMPUS ALERT: CAMPUS ADVISORY (4:20 PM). BONNEVILLE FIRE UPDATE
Sun Jun 21, 2026 4:17 PM
As the Bonneville Fire continues to burn in the foothills north of the University of Utah campus, air quality around campus will be impacted over the next week.
Campus operations, including U of U Health, classes and special events will continue as normal. Some activities may need to be adjusted based on first responder needs. Please avoid areas affected by fire operations and stay clear of emergency vehicles, equipment and personnel so firefighters can safely perform their work.
Students, faculty and staff with concerns about smoke exposure are encouraged to discuss flexible work arrangements, including remote work options where appropriate, with their supervisor. Some buildings on campus may be affected more than others and campus leaders are in touch with building managers to adjust operations in individual buildings.
Individuals who are sensitive to smoke, including those with asthma, heart or lung conditions, older adults and others with respiratory concerns, should consider limiting prolonged outdoor activity when smoke is present.
Students needing temporary academic accommodations should seek assistance from the Center for Disability and Access.
Please be aware that wildlife may be displaced during this time so give them plenty of space. Report any dangerous animal sightings to public safety dispatch at the non-emergency line at 801-585-2677.
If circumstances change, please watch campus alerts and other official university channels for updates.
U of U CAMPUS ALERT: SAFETY NOTICE:
Sun Jun 21, 2026 12:11 PM
State wildland fire resources have been dispatched to fight the blaze in the foothills north and east of campus overnight. Fire crews are on site to actively mitigate and monitor the progress of the fire.
We appreciate their tireless efforts on our behalf to preserve the campus community’s safety and protect critical healthcare facilities from significant damage.
Emergency crews have set up a fire command center on campus to manage firefighting efforts. Firefighters also will be camping in tents around Officer’s Circle in Ft. Douglas Saturday night.
All University of Utah Health facilities remain fully operational.
The campus community will continue to see fire on the hillside and experience smoke in the neighborhoods throughout the night. Some residual smoke may continue to impact the health campus and student housing as the fire burns further into the foothills. Be cautious when opening windows.
University of Utah Police continue to ask all campus community members—residents, staff and patients–to stay away from the impacted area, allowing fire crews and police to do their work. Please give fire crews space, including not flying private drones over the fire that would interfere with firefighting efforts.
This will be the final update for the fire unless circumstances change.
Call 801-585-2677 to report an emergency.
